If you’re in the mood for a turbulent and passionate tragedy, don’t miss William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar during the upcoming Stratford Festival season. 2018 has been a very interesting year for real-life politics, so it seems fitting Stratford will be showcasing this particular work of one of the most famous playwrights of all time.
“Beware the Ides of March”
Julius Caesar will transport you from great triumph to terrible tragedy. The play follows the conspirators who attempt to overthrow the Roman Emperor, Julius Caesar, following the defeat of Pompey. Caesar’s over-confidence and unwillingness to listen to the warnings of his close circle entrap him in a world of danger and violence.
While these trials and tribulations place the Emperor in a terrible position, they certainly create an extraordinarily exciting plotline for audience members who appreciate the power of theatre to depict the human struggle and emotions involved in political conflict. What’s more, the play will be performed with the awe-inspiring costumes and staging that define the Stratford Festival as one of the most exceptional theatre companies in Canada.
Seana McKenna as Julius Caesar
In this 66th season of the Stratford Festival, we will see a shift in traditional casting. Seana McKenna and several other female actors have taken on lead roles typically played by men in the Shakespearean productions of Julius Caesar, The Tempest and the Comedy of Errors.
McKenna, a long-time Stratford festival star takes on the role of the infamous Julius Caesar. McKenna is no novice to playing strong, male characters at the Stratford Festival, having played both Richard III and Jaques, she will also take on the role of King Lear in Toronto this coming year.
Stratford Pays a Perfect Ode to the Bard
While the name of the play highlights the great (or terrible) Caesar, the title character, Brutus, who is played by Jonathan Goad, will capture your attention with numerous impassioned speeches about his contrasting demands as a politician, citizen and human being. Jonathan is in his 14th season at Stratford and for this many years, he has captivated audiences with his ability to embody complex characters who demand their empathy and appreciation – whether they are wholly good or despicable.
